- WhatsApp ads start a real conversation and usually bring warmer leads.
- Lead forms bring more volume, but you need to filter for quality.
- Whichever you choose, how fast you reply decides the result.
On Facebook and Instagram, the two most popular ways to get enquiries are click-to-WhatsApp ads and lead form ads (Meta calls them instant forms). Both work. But they suit different businesses, and choosing the wrong one can quietly double your cost per customer.
How each one works
WhatsApp ads open a chat with your business, often with a pre-filled message. The customer asks a question and you reply.
Lead form ads open a short form inside Facebook or Instagram. The person submits their name and number without leaving the app, and your team calls them back.
Side by side
| WhatsApp ads | Lead form ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Lead quality | Usually warmer, they started the chat | Mixed, some forget they applied |
| Volume | Moderate | Higher |
| Cost per lead | Often a little higher | Often lower |
| Your effort | Reply in chat, quickly | Call back, quickly |
| Best for | Retail, restaurants, clinics, gyms | Real estate, education, high-value services |
When WhatsApp ads win
Choose WhatsApp when customers want to ask a quick question before buying: price, availability, delivery, appointment slots. Furniture shops, boutiques, clinics, restaurants and gyms usually do well here, because the chat itself moves the sale forward.
When lead forms win
Choose lead forms when you need details before you can help, or when your sales team calls every lead anyway. Real estate, education and B2B services are a good fit.
Two settings make a big difference: pick the Higher intent form type, which adds a review screen before people submit, and add one or two qualifying questions such as budget or preferred location. You’ll get fewer leads, but far fewer junk ones.

The real deciding factor: reply speed
A lead that waits three hours has probably already messaged your competitor. Whichever format you choose:
- Set up a greeting message and quick replies in the WhatsApp Business app.
- Call form leads within 5–10 minutes during working hours.
- Track every lead and what happened to it in one simple sheet.
My recommendation
Not sure? Start with WhatsApp ads if your team is good at chatting, and lead forms if your team is good at calling. Run one for a month, measure cost per customer (not just cost per lead), then test the other. Need help setting it up? Message me on WhatsApp.
